A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.
Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

You know for some books it's good to go in blind and let the story takes you wherever it might. It also is the author's intention too, that's why the blurb doesn't give us any ideas of what the story is really about. Even though from the tone of it I could guess this was going to be sad one way or the other. Just one thing don't let your expectation too high because it might ruin the experience. It is a good book. Yes, I totally agreed but I just couldn't say it's the best book of the year or the best book I've read. I liked it, true, but loved it? not quite there yet.

How should I say this without giving anything away? The mystery was the main thing that kept me reading because I just needed to know the answer. I didn't fall in love with the characters or the writing. The main character is kind of a drama queen in my opinion and I just couldn't be on the same page with her. Some poetic writings in there, but it was just so hard for me to find it beautiful since I just reread Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Because this book got so many hyped and a lot of people praised about the unique writing, I was so excited and decided to read Shakespeare to prepare for the "mood." Not a good idea at all.

So as a conclusion, do pick this up. Go in blind and let the story unfolds but just don't have any expectation at all.

  1. Great review! I've been wanting to read this book for a while now but I just haven't gotten around to it. I do love mysteries though. Although poetic language? Not so much.
