While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Oh boy, where should I start? It's such a bummer because I really wanted to love this book. The cover is so pretty and the synopsis sounds really cool. And yes, indeed the plot is interesting but that's all there is to it. Ok let's break it down

World Building: uhm what is it again? Ah world building. I'm sorry but I don't think there's anything to say. I finished this book and still I know nothing about this world.

The characters: I didn't like any of them. Rachel drove me crazy constantly. You can't believe how many times I decided to quit reading this book because I just couldn't stand Rachel. I was told that she is smart, beautiful and strong (yeah the book kept telling me how strong and determine Rachel is). Can you see the problem here? Rachel seems unreal to me, she's just TOO perfect. And I don't want to be told how the character is, I want to see that for myself, by their actions. And judging by Rachel's actions, let me tell you she is weak, weak, WEAK!!!! Logan, ah another too perfect character, the book said that he's smart, a good fighter and really good looking. The commander, oh he is evil. What? you want to know more about him. Ok, he's evil, you know he does bad things. He's evil. End of story, don't ask anymore ok because that's all we need to know: he's evil. The chracters *sigh* they're just all so flat =X And don't get me started on the love interest, I don't even want to remember it.

The reason I gave this book 3 stars was because of the plot. I did enjoy the story despite it has its flaws. The second half of the book is not that bad (at least we have some actions here). And there are just so many things unanswered at the end of this book. So maybe I'll check out the sequel to find out the answers if I have time or maybe not, we'll see.

  1. To bad abou the characters. I feel that very few authors can have well rounded characters. either they are "weak like Bella" or they are trying to be perfect. I myself feel that is one of the things that is really great about Harry Potter. All of the characters have their flaws but they also have things about them that are so special and lovable that we forget or forgive the flaws.
I'm really happy that I did not rush to buy this book.
Great review! sorry it wasn't better.
