What inspired me to write Storm Siren

It says, “You were once wild here, don’t let them tame you.”*
It’s what I tell the teen girls I work with. It’s what I tell myself.
I think in my own way it’s a reminder of what I believe – that we are born into this world as passionate, creative beings and THAT is who we are meant to be. Unfortunately, so often it seems like our culture and media are shouting the opposite, or, at the very least, yelling mixed messages of what strength and beauty are. Especially for women. We’re told to “just be ourselves” but then promptly heaped with a host of shallow expectations that can make one feel never quite good enough. It can be intimidating and devaluing, and I think it leaves a lot of people, teens particularly, asking - Can’t I be valued and respected for simply being me?
With that in mind, the inspiration behind Storm Siren came from the conviction that we are ALREADY incredible human beings, each existing for a unique purpose. And that is definitely the story of Nym and Storm Siren...that no matter what expectations have been put on us, or how broken down we’ve been, or even how much we may have failed others, there is beauty in us. There is so much to who we are and who we can impact with our life stories. And as we do? Our stories entwine with others’ and we share in this journey together.
And when we embrace that?
We truly are wild. Beautiful. Untameable. :0)
